Title: Covid and the Classroom: Teaching Moments for Undergraduate Business Education
Author(s) : Charles Coate, Mark Mitschow
Abstract Pandemic responses have reduced the spread of Covid-19 but have also created a number of negative outcomes, including social isolation that has contributed to rising rates of suicide, domestic violence, and substance abuse. While these negative externalities have adversely impacted all demographics, many of these outcomes have disproportionately impacted populations at less risk from the most serious Covid outcomes (e.g., young people). The purpose of this paper is to discuss how some of these externalities have changed particularly the undergraduate education environment in positive and negative ways. The paper will not focus on solutions. Instead, it will discuss some of the problems experienced by colleges and how they have addressed them. Hopefully educators can then use these experiences to remediate expected difficulties and take advantage of any opportunities presented by the various pandemic responses. Key Words: Covid-19, the pandemic, pandemic responses, pandemic lockdowns, social isolation, higher education.
