Title: The Effect of a Virtual Modality on Preparing Student Teams for Competitions

Author(s) : Mary Ellen Zuckerman, Leonie Stone

We discuss the effect of the move from intensive face-to-face activity to virtual communication modes in preparing student teams for high level economics competitions, where collaboration, team work and individual responsibility are key to success. We also examine the ways competitions themselves have changed to accommodate online learning, and the effect on student preparation, engagement and learning. We use the specific examples of the well established Fed Challenge and the new this year FDIC competition. Activities which had to be reimagined include collaboration, team building, delegation and division of labor and written and oral communication products. New skill development included technical knowledge and the need for adaptability and resilience. We share lessons learned, including challenges, solutions, and learnings that will continue when face to face resumes.
