Title: The Eye of The Beholder: Asymmetric Perceptions of Artificial Intelligence Misuse in Self Versus Others

Author(s) : Yiru Wang, Jinpei Wu, Barry Friedman

As artificial intelligence (AI) applications proliferate across professions, understanding factors that influence individuals' likelihood to misuse AI is crucial. This research delved into the intricate dynamics of individual experiences with AI and their planned behavioral attributes, including behavioral attitudes, social expectations, and behavioral intentions. Using attribution and the theory of planned behavior theories, we investigated how these elements interact to shape AI misuse perceptions. Our findings indicated that individuals with high AI familiarity believe that AI misuse was more pronounced for individuals outside their own business profession compared to those within it. However, this perception varied significantly depending on discipline. For instance, those in human resource (HR) perceived less AI misuse within their own field but more in other business functions. Conversely, professionals in finance and accounting perceived less AI misuse within the HR function but more in other areas, including their own. Future research and implications are discussed.
