Title: The Four Pillars of Curriculum Review

Author(s) : Barry A. Friedman, Steven E. Abraham, Thomas K. Ingram

In pursuit of our SUNY-Oswego School of Business mission to prepare students as competent and ethical professionals, we conducted a comprehensive review of our Human Resource Management (HRM) curriculum. The review consisted of four pillars: (1) the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) review of core and cognate courses required for the major, (2) an examination of the curricula of 28 peer, competitive, and aspirant schools, (3) an HRM Program Advisory Group critical analysis, and (4) a student leadership critical analysis. The review was conducted during the 2023-2024 academic year. Each of the four pillars is discussed with respect to results and lessons learned. We concluded that our curriculum is aligned with HR competencies and knowledge required for field HR effectiveness, and that the four-pronged review approach of internal and external perspectives yielded comprehensive and complementary information that resulted in valuable curriculum improvement recommendations. Our review process has implications for curriculum reviews across disciplines.
